소개ㅣ깊은 어둠을 품은 표면 위에 천천히 번져가는 빛. 손수경 작가의 옻칠 작업은 그 고요한 흐름을 기록하는 일종의 ‘침묵의 시간’이다. 수십 번의 칠과 말림을 반복하며 쌓인 층들은 눈에 보이지 않을 만큼 미세하지만, 시간이 겹겹이 응축된 깊이를 만들어낸다.
작가는 번쩍이는 광택이나 빠른 효과를 좇지 않는다. 대신 옻이 스스로 굳고, 스며들고, 다시 숨을 고르는 자연스러운 호흡을 그대로 받아들인다. 그렇게 완성된 표면은 빛을 직접적으로 반사하지 않고, 마치 안쪽에서 잔잔히 우러나듯 은은한 명도를 띤다. 이는 단순한 색의 표현을 넘어서, 작가가 마주한 내면의 정적과 묵묵한 집중의 흔적을 드러낸다.
‘Silence’는 바로 그 정적에 대한 탐구이다. 고요는 비어 있지 않다. 옻칠이 마르는 동안의 긴 기다림, 반복되는 손의 리듬, 표면에 스며든 시간의 밀도 모두가 이 침묵을 채운다. 관람자는 작업 속에 숨겨진 이러한 호흡을 따라가며, 시각적 소음이 사라진 자리에서 스스로의 감각에 귀를 기울이게 된다. 빛의 속삭임, 표면의 떨림, 반복의 힘. 이번 전시는 그 조용한 울림을 마주하는 자리이자, 우리 안의 미세한 감정들이 다시 깨어나는 순간을 제공한다.

난각 한 조각 한 조각이 달항아리와 질그릇을 이뤄갈 때
나의 기쁨도 고요도 소망도 핀셋끝 매달린 난각 한조각의 떨림으로 녹아 들어간다.
더 이상 무엇을 증명하지 않아도 내면의 충만함이 중요한 삶.. 또한 하나씩 내려놓기 시작했을때 나 자신이 조금 더 괜찮은 사람처럼 느껴졌고, 더 가치 있는 존재가 된 것만 같았다.
Curatorial Statement
On a surface that holds a quiet darkness, light slowly spreads. The lacquer works of artist Shon, Soo-Kyung record this gentle movement—an accumulation of moments that form a kind of silent time. Through countless cycles of coating and drying, each layer builds upon the last, creating a depth so subtle it is almost imperceptible, yet dense with time.
The artist does not pursue dazzling sheen or instant effects. Instead, she accepts the natural rhythm in which lacquer hardens, seeps in, and pauses to breathe again. The resulting surface does not reflect light sharply; rather, it emits a soft luminosity as though it rises from within. This is not merely an expression of color but a manifestation of the artist’s inner stillness and the quiet concentration embedded in the work.
Silence is an exploration of that stillness. Silence is not empty. It is filled with the long waiting as lacquer dries, the steady rhythm of repeated gestures, and the density of time absorbed into the surface. As viewers trace these breaths and intervals, they find themselves listening more closely, freed from the noise of the visual world.
Shon, Soo-Kyung’s work speaks without words—through the whisper of light, the subtle tremor of the surface, and the power of repetition. This exhibition offers a space to encounter that quiet resonance and to awaken the delicate emotions that lie within us.
Artist Note
As each fragment of eggshell comes together to form a moon jar or an earthenware vessel,
my joy, my stillness, and my hopes dissolve into the subtle tremor held at the tip of my tweezers.
A life where inner fullness matters more than proving anything—and as I began to set things down, one by one,
I started to feel like a slightly better version of myself, as if I had become someone a little more worthy.
