전시명 ㅣ 버리지 못한 마음들 : Still Life, Still Living

소개 ㅣ 우리는 종종 사물을 통해 지나간 관계를 기억한다. 박나회의 작업은 이러한 사물과 감정 사이의 미묘한 긴장에서 출발한다. 작가의 화면에 등장하는 오브제들은 일상적인 것처럼 보이지만, 단순한 재현에 머물지 않는다. 익숙한 대상들은 명확한 이야기를 제시하기보다, 보이지 않는 시간의 층위와 감정의 잔여를 암시하는 장치로 기능한다. 관람자는 이미지 속에서 무엇이 존재하는지를 확인하기보다, 무엇이 사라지고 남았는지를 감각하게 된다. 그 순간 화면은 존재와 부재 사이의 경계로 전환된다.
바니타스(Vanitas) 정물화가 삶의 덧없음을 상징적으로 드러냈다면, 박나회의 작업은 보다 사적인 차원에서 기억과 시간의 지속성을 탐색한다. 극적인 사건이나 서사를 전면에 내세우기보다, 남겨진 사물과 일상의 흔적을 통해 감정이 머무는 방식을 천천히 드러낸다. 이때 정물은 고정된 대상이 아니라, 관람자의 경험과 만나며 의미가 끊임없이 갱신되는 열린 구조가 된다.
특히 화면 속 프레임은 하나의 경계이자 장치로 작동한다. 내부와 외부, 과거와 현재, 개인적 기억과 보편적 경험이 그 안에서 교차하며 관람자는 자연스럽게 자신의 기억을 호출하게 된다. 작품은 특정한 해석을 요구하기보다, 각자의 시간 속에서 감정의 결을 발견하도록 여백을 남긴다.
이번 전시는 무엇을 잃었는지를 말하기보다, 부재 이후에도 여전히 남아 있는 것들에 주목한다. 조용히 놓인 사물들은 침묵 속에서도 강한 존재감을 발하며, 관람자는 그 사이에서 자신의 기억과 마주하게 된다. 박나회의 작업은 설명되지 않는 감정의 영역을 서두르지 않고 바라보며, 붙잡고 있는 것과 결국 놓아야 하는 것 사이의 미묘한 균형을 사유하게 한다.
작가노트 ㅣ죽음 이후의 삶’이라는 말은 흔히 천국이나 지옥 같은 사후 세계의 풍경을 상상하게 한다. 그러나 내게 있어 죽음 이후의 삶이란 떠나간 이들의 것이 아닌, 남아있는 자들의 몫이다. 그것은 떠나간 이의 부재를 짊어진 채 계속되어야 하는 일상이자, 상실의 흔적을 소화해내는 과정이기 때문이다. (중략)
버리지 못하는 마음과 보내야 하는 시간 사이의 갈등은 프레임 안에서 정적이지만 격렬한 이미지들로 치환된다.그러나 사랑은 상실 앞에 침묵하지 않고 끝없이 항의한다. 살아남은 이들은 죽음의 표상들과 뒤섞인 채 이전과는 다른 삶을 살아가지만, 그 속에서도 삶의 의지는 계속된다.
지금 여기에 살아있음에서 기인하는 불안과 떠나간 존재에 대한 지독한 그리움을 동시에 담아낸다. 삶은 끝까지 다 설명할 수 없는 형언불가한 채로 남겠지만, 이 프레임들을 통해 그 불투명한 생의 궤적을 묵묵히 추적하고자 한다.

<Unabandoned Hearts : Still Life, Still Living> - Solo Exhibition by Nahwoe Park
We often remember past relationships through objects. Nahwoe Park’s work begins within this subtle tension between material things and emotional memory. The objects that appear in her compositions may seem ordinary, yet they move beyond simple representation. Rather than presenting clear narratives, familiar forms function as quiet vessels that suggest unseen layers of time and emotional residue. Viewers are invited not merely to observe what is present, but to sense what has disappeared and what continues to remain. In this moment, the image becomes a threshold between presence and absence.
While traditional vanitas still-life painting symbolically addressed the transience of life, Park’s practice explores the persistence of memory and time on a more intimate scale. Instead of foregrounding dramatic events or explicit storytelling, she reveals how emotions linger through remaining objects and everyday traces. Here, still life is not a fixed subject but an open structure whose meaning continually evolves through the viewer’s experience.
The pictorial frame functions as both boundary and device. Inside it, interior and exterior, past and present, personal memory and shared experience intersect, prompting viewers to recall their own narratives. Rather than directing a singular interpretation, the work leaves space for individual encounters and emotional resonance.
This exhibition does not attempt to define loss itself; instead, it reflects on what continues to exist after absence. Quietly arranged objects carry a powerful presence despite their stillness, inviting viewers to confront their own memories and sense of time. Nahwoe Park’s practice lingers within the unarticulated space of emotion, encouraging reflection on the delicate balance between what we hold onto and what we eventually must let go.
