소개 ㅣ우리는 때때로 설명할 수 없는 이미지와 마주한다. 기억이라고 부르기에는 모호하고, 상상이라 하기에는 지나치게 선명한 장면들은 의식의 경계를 스치며 머물다 사라진다. 이번 전시 ‘떠도는 짐승과 낯선 이에게’는 바로 그 불분명한 지점에서 출발한다.
이세림 작가에게 이미지는 단순한 재현의 대상이 아니다. 그것은 오랜 시간 몸에 축적된 감각, 기억, 무의식의 흔적들이 서로 얽히고 교차하며 생성되는 하나의 풍경이다. 화면 속 형상들은 특정한 서사를 설명하기보다, 언어 이전의 감각과 내면 깊숙한 곳에 잠재된 정서를 불러낸다.
석회를 바른 캔버스와 불규칙한 석고 위에 새겨진 이미지들은 마치 오래된 벽화의 파편처럼 시간의 층위를 품고 있다. 단단한 표면 위에 축적된 흔적들은 끊임없이 생성과 소멸을 반복하며, 익숙하면서도 낯선 존재의 얼굴을 드러낸다. 그것은 어쩌면 아직 알지 못하는 자기 자신이며, 무심히 지나쳤던 기억의 잔상이기도 하다.
작가는 작품 속에 흩어진 기억과 감각의 파편들이 하나의 이미지로 직조되는 과정을 담아낸다. 이번 전시는 무의식 속의 이미지와 기억, 감각이 교차하는 지점에서 형성된 내면의 풍경을 선보인다.
작가노트 ㅣ 어느 여행지를 떠나기 전날 아침이었다. 산책로를 걷다 눈앞에 펼쳐진 올리브밭과 그 주위를 맴도는 풀내음 속에서 황무지를 헤매던 한 마리 짐승과 주인이 만나는 이미지가 떠올랐다. 이유는 알 수 없었다. 서로 다른 멜로디가 우연히 연결되듯 머릿속에 떠도는 이미지들은 때때로 기묘하게 연결되고 뒤섞인다.
감각을 통해 축적된 기억과 경험은 무의식의 표면을 떠돌며 설명할 수 없는 방식으로 이미지를 연결하고 결합해 뇌리에 떠올랐다가 가라앉는다. 이미지를 그려내는 일은 무의식의 사이를 떠도는 파편들을 몸의 기억으로 줍거나 기워내는 과정이다. 몸이 기억하는 균형과 비례로 떠도는 형상을 물리적 표면으로 옮기며 내가 모르는 ‘나’를 알아간다. 미지의 ‘내’가 남긴 흔적들로 그의 생각을 추적하고 상상하고 직조하며 되새긴다.
석회를 바른 캔버스와 불규칙한 모양의 석고 위에 수없이 연결되고 해체되는 이미지의 흔적을 그려나간다. 내가 모르는 ‘나’의 일부를 곱씹는다. 오랜 시간이 지나도 남아있는 벽화처럼, 단단한 표면에 복잡한 이미지를 새기며 내가 모르는 낯선 ‘나’를 떠올린다.

<To the Wandering Beast and the Stranger> - Lee, Serim
At times, we encounter images that resist explanation. Too elusive to be called memories, yet too vivid to be mere imagination, they linger at the edge of consciousness before quietly fading away. 'To the Wandering Beast and the Stranger' begins from this ambiguous territory.
For Lee, Serim, images are not simply subjects of representation. They are landscapes formed through the intertwining of accumulated sensations, memories, and traces of the unconscious. Rather than conveying a specific narrative, the forms that emerge within her work evoke emotions and sensations that exist beyond language.
Rendered on lime wash canvases and irregular plaster surfaces, the images carry layers of time like fragments of ancient murals. The traces embedded within these solid surfaces continuously appear and disappear, revealing presences that feel both familiar and unfamiliar. They may be reflections of a self not yet fully known, or lingering echoes of forgotten memories.
Lee captures the process through which scattered fragments of memory and sensation are woven into a single image. This exhibition presents inner landscapes shaped at the intersection of unconscious imagery, memory, and perception.
Artist Note
It was the morning before leaving a place I had been traveling. While walking along a path, I found myself surrounded by the scent of grass drifting through an olive grove. In that moment, an image appeared in my mind: a wandering beast crossing a barren land and finally meeting its owner. I could not explain why.
Images drift through the mind much like melodies that unexpectedly connect. Memories and experiences accumulated through the senses float across the surface of the unconscious, linking and merging in ways that defy logic. They rise to consciousness, then sink away again.
Creating images is a process of gathering and stitching together these drifting fragments through the memory of the body. Guided by the body's sense of balance and proportion, I transfer fleeting forms onto physical surfaces, gradually discovering parts of myself that remain unknown. Through the traces left by this unfamiliar self, I follow, imagine, weave, and revisit its thoughts.
On lime wash canvases and irregular plaster forms, I draw traces of images that are endlessly connected and dismantled. I reflect upon the parts of myself I do not yet know. Like murals that endure through time, I carve complex images into solid surfaces, recalling the unfamiliar self that remains hidden within.
