소개 ㅣ 오랜 시간 우리 곁에 머물러온 것은 늘 너무 익숙해서 쉽게 의식되지 않는다. 그러나 어떤 것들은 그 익숙함 속에서 더욱 깊은 의미를 품는다. 세종대왕이 남긴 문자는 단순한 기록의 도구를 넘어, 시대를 건너 사람과 사람의 마음을 잇는 조용한 다리로 존재해왔다. 그 다정한 시작은 수백 년의 시간을 지나 오늘의 일상 속에서도 여전히 살아 숨 쉬고 있다.
김정민의 작업은 이 오래된 문자를 새로운 감각으로 다시 바라보는 데서 출발한다. 화면 위에 흩어진 형태들은 더 이상 읽히기 위한 기호에 머물지 않고, 서로를 향해 스며들며 하나의 유기적 형상을 이룬다. 분리되어 있던 요소들은 자연스럽게 결합하며, 어느 순간 꽃의 형상으로 피어난다. 그 안에는 언어가 지닌 따뜻한 결속과, 보이지 않지만 분명히 이어져 있는 관계의 흐름이 담겨 있다.
직선과 곡선이 만들어내는 리듬은 생명력을 획득하고, 구조는 감각으로 변모한다. 단단한 형태는 뿌리가 되고, 부드러운 선은 잎과 꽃잎으로 번져나가며, 화면은 하나의 살아 있는 풍경으로 확장된다. 이는 문자가 단순한 체계가 아니라, 우리의 삶을 지탱하고 감정을 머금는 근원적 기반임을 환기시킨다.
작품에 스며든 시간의 흔적은 단지 과거를 재현하는 데 그치지 않는다. 그것은 오랜 세월 동안 반복되고 축적된 삶의 결을 드러내며, 지금 이 순간에도 이어지고 있는 현재의 호흡을 품고 있다. 마치 계절의 순환 속에서 다시 피어나는 꽃처럼, 이 작업은 오래된 의미를 오늘의 감각으로 되살린다.
햇살이 가장 투명해지는 계절, 이 전시는 우리에게 조용히 다가온다. 말없이 건네는 인사처럼, 혹은 어느 날 문득 스며드는 바람처럼. 김정민이 펼쳐 보이는 이 ‘5월의 선물’은 우리가 이미 알고 있었지만 미처 들여다보지 못했던 따뜻한 언어의 온기를 다시금 감각하게 한다.
작가노트 ㅣ 누구나 제 뜻을 담아 쉽게 쓰고 누리길 바라며 품었던 세종의 다정한 마음은, 580여 년의 세월을 지나 오늘 우리의 삶 속에 자연스럽게 자리하고 있다. 이번 작업은 그 애틋한 ‘애민(愛民)’의 진심을 한글의 조형미를 통해 다시 바라보고, 이를 차분한 시각 언어로 풀어낸 것이다. 글자를 단순한 기호가 아닌, 마음을 담는 그릇으로 생각하며 한글이 지닌 온기를 오월의 꽃의 모습으로 표현하고자 했다.
화면을 이루는 자음과 모음의 조각들은 서로를 보듬으며 하나의 꽃 형태를 만든다. 맞물린 획과 획 사이에는 사람과 사람, 삶과 삶을 이어주는 언어의 생명력이 담겨 있다. 곧은 선은 줄기가 되고, 곡선은 유연한 꽃잎이 되어 글자라는 기호는 이내 생동하는 자연의 미학으로 변모한다. 이는 한글이 단순한 문자에 그치지 않고 우리 존재를 지탱하는 깊은 뿌리이자 연결 고리임을 상징한다.
오래된 질감 위에 새겨진 글자들은 창제의 순간에 머무르지 않고, 오랜 시간 일상 속에서 함께 살아 움직여온 시간을 증명한다. 척박한 계절을 견디고 마침내 피어난 꽃처럼, 한글은 그렇게 우리의 삶 가까이에서 가장 낮고 따뜻한 목소리로 존재해 왔다. 오월의 맑은 빛 아래 만개한 이 ‘한글 꽃’이 먼 과거 어느 날 건네졌을 다정한 인사의 잔향처럼, 오늘의 우리에게도 선뜻 찾아든 자연 푸름같이, 오월의 선물로 마음에 잔잔히 닿기를 생각한다.

<A Gift of May> - Solo Exhibition by Jung-Min Kim
What has long remained by our side often becomes so familiar that we scarcely notice it. Yet within that familiarity, certain things hold a deeper resonance. The script created by King Sejong the Great transcends its role as a mere tool of record, existing instead as a quiet bridge that carries the hearts of people across time. Its compassionate beginning has endured for centuries and continues to breathe within our everyday lives.
Kim Jung-Min’s work begins by revisiting this ancient script through a renewed sensibility. The forms scattered across the canvas no longer remain as symbols meant solely to be read; they gently permeate one another, forming an organic whole. Elements once separate come together naturally and, at a certain moment, bloom into the shape of a flower. Within this transformation lies the warmth of language’s connective power and the subtle yet undeniable flow of relationships that bind us.
The rhythm created by straight lines and curves gradually acquires vitality, as structure transforms into sensation. Firm forms take root, while softer lines extend into leaves and petals, expanding the canvas into a living landscape. In doing so, the work reminds us that script is not merely a system of signs, but a fundamental foundation that sustains our lives and carries our emotions.
The traces of time embedded in the work do not simply recreate the past. Rather, they reveal the layered textures of life accumulated over time, holding within them the breath of the present moment that continues to unfold. Like a flower that blooms again through the cycle of seasons, the work revives enduring meanings through a contemporary sensibility.
In the season when sunlight becomes most lucid, this exhibition approaches us quietly—like a wordless greeting, or a breeze that gently seeps in without notice. “A Gift of May,” as presented by Kim Jung-Min, allows us to once again sense the warmth of a language we have always known, yet have not fully paused to feel.
