Curatorial Statement
Since ancient times, people have relied on unseen forces. In uncertain moments, they created protective beings to keep away misfortune and invite good fortune. These guardians lived on through myths and traditions, watching over us with sacred presence.
In Guardians, artist Clara Baik reimagines these protectors with a new spirit. Fierceness gives way to warmth, and fear is replaced by courage and encouragement. Drawing on symbols from Greek and Roman mythology as well as Korean tradition, the artist shows how timeless stories can take on fresh meaning through today’s colors and sensibilities.

Since childhood, I have been fascinated by the imagination found in history and mythology. I was especially intrigued by how stories from Greek and Roman mythology continue to live on today through art and design, carrying new meanings across time. The Medusa logo of Versace, reborn with striking intensity, or the pharmacy signs marked with the Rod of Asclepius, symbolizing healing and renewal, are examples of symbols that bridge the past and present in powerful ways.
This fascination naturally led me to explore symbols and stories within Korean tradition that are still alive today, which became the foundation of my work. In the past, people created fierce-looking mythical creatures to ward off misfortune in uncertain times. In my paintings, however, they return as friendly companions who still carry sacred power while offering protection. I call them my “Guardians” or “Protective Friends,” because they were the beings who stood by me during the difficult days of the pandemic, giving me the strength to begin again.
My Guardians are bringers of good fortune, smiling gently as they share courage and encouragement. The turtle,
I hope my paintings can pass on a message of positivity and strength to those who encounter them.
