<The Melody of Rest> Park, Haena / Choi, Yeon

In the midst of our busy lives and the increasingly hurried rhythm of existence, we all long for a place of our own where we can pause and breathe fully. A moment to slow down, reconnect with emotions we may have forgotten, and turn our gaze inward once again. <The Melody of Rest> presents the landscapes of childhood memories and consolation as expressed through the distinct artistic languages of Park Haena and Choi Yeon.

Park Haena creates landscapes by layering fragments of distant memories with imagination. Houses, flowering trees, flowers, and birds come together in scenes that feel less like specific places in reality and more like warm landscapes preserved somewhere within the heart. Her gentle colors and freely expressive brushwork unfold like a quiet song or a page from a fairytale, slowly awakening a sense of peace and joy that may have long been forgotten.

Choi Yeon explores childhood memories and the joys and sorrows of life through the familiar yet symbolic space of the playground. The up-and-down movement of slides, seesaws, and swings evokes the many turns and rhythms of life, while the children playing freely within them embody an innocent willingness to embrace life as it comes. For the artist, the playground is more than a place for play; it is a space where one can set down the weight of everyday life for a moment and once again see the world through the eyes of a child.

Although the two artists begin from distinctly different landscapes, their works ultimately arrive at a shared emotional territory: the tenderness, serenity, and renewed strength that are so easily forgotten in the course of everyday life. If Park Haena’s landscapes seep into the heart like a gentle melody, Choi Yeon’s playground becomes a place where we can pause, stay awhile, and catch our breath.

Through familiar landscapes, cherished memories, a child’s perspective, and warm colors, the exhibition quietly calls forth the small sense of peace that remains within us. We hope that, surrounded by the gentle landscapes created by these two artists, visitors will be able to slow the pace of everyday life, reconnect with precious emotions held deep within, and experience a moment of quiet restoration.

Artist Statement by Park, Haena

My paintings are created by layering imagination upon fragments of distant memories, transforming them into landscapes of my own. Within these scenes are houses that offer a place of rest and nostalgic landscapes that evoke a sense of longing. Birds and fish moving among flowering trees become symbolic vessels for hope, happiness, and dreams.

The flowering trees that often appear in the foreground of my paintings represent more than natural scenery. They are places of refuge and sanctuary—spaces where beings can lean upon one another, connect, and simply remain together. In the Stories of Happiness series, I bring together pointillist techniques, palette-knife applications, and freely expressive brushstrokes to create varied images and moods. Among the works in the series, Serenity conveys a quiet sense of comfort through a tranquil scene that seems to be gently touched by moonlight. Gentleness captures the modest and tender happiness of an ordinary spring day, with soft sunlight and a light breeze, while leaving room for the viewer’s imagination to wander. Melody fills the canvas with lively colors and rhythms that evoke the feeling of a distant whistle drifting from somewhere deep within the woods. The gentle and tender language that resides within these works comes together like harmony, becoming a song. It is both a refuge where weary hearts can briefly set down their burdens and an ideal world that we carry within ourselves.

My paintings are like fairytales quietly blooming on the boundary between reality and imagination. I hope that those who encounter them will be able to slow the pace of everyday life for a moment and reconnect with warm memories they may have forgotten. Above all, I hope that the warmth carried by these paintings will remain with them as a quiet, lingering impression.

Artist Statement by Choi, Yeon

The familiar subject of the ‘playground’ led me to reflect on the joys and sorrows of life. Watching children delight in slides, seesaws, and swings—each moving through their own rhythms of ascent and descent—I discovered an innocence that embraces life as if it were a form of play.

Wrapped in a warm, soft blanket or wandering through the snow-covered alley outside their homes, children can transform almost anywhere into a playground. They pause before a small dandelion blooming in a secluded corner, or look up as cherry blossoms drift gently above their heads, embracing each fleeting moment of joy. These ordinary scenes remind me that we all need a time and a place where we can set down the fatigue of body and mind, pause, and breathe again.

The phrase, ‘The child is the father of the man,’ often comes to mind. It reminds me of my desire to see the world once again through the eyes of a child. Like the journey Nietzsche describes—from the camel to the lion, and from the lion to the child—I seek to release the weight of life and the conventions that shape us, and to return to a state of greater freedom and innocence.

To me, the playground is more than a place for play. It is a small landscape of life where joy and sorrow, rising and falling, coexist. It is also a space where we can pause for a moment and look back upon ourselves.
In the playground, I become a child once again. I want to rediscover the heart that once saw the world more lightly, found joy in the smallest things, and embraced life as a form of play. I hope that this feeling, too, can quietly reach those who encounter my paintings.

2026. 8. 12.(Wed)- 8. 23.(Sun)

<Breath, continued> KANG, Yoo Lim

Having previously captured the traces of human life through facial expressions, artist Yoo-Lim Kang expands her gaze toward nature, continuing a profound exploration of existence and time. Where the "face" was once a narrative and a condensation of lived time, the "forest" emerges as a vast living sanctuary where time and existence reside. In this exhibition, Kang reconstructs the forms of nature not as objects of detached contemplation, but as an organic space created through overlapping layers of time.

While her early works expressed the subtle tones of time through the bleeding of ink on traditional Korean paper (hanji), her recent practice delves into the accumulation of materiality and color through natural mineral pigments (seokchae). Built layer upon layer, the colors and matière reach completion through a conscious cycle of adding and paring away. As forms are emptied, time remains on the canvas, rendering the invisible energy of nature far more vivid than its visual appearance. The vertical rhythm of bamboo traversing the surface goes beyond simple representation; it is a visual language revealing the breath of coexisting entities leaning on one another, as well as the accumulation of time.

Embracing the daily discipline of brushwork as a form of ascetic practice, Kang seeks to embody how nature retains time. The layers of ink, the texture of mineral pigments, and the subtle traces grazing the canvas are the results of slowly building up "time"—the most fundamental structure shaping existence.

Yoo-Lim Kang’s work invites viewers past the stationary landscape to encounter the invisible breath woven into it. Before these flexible yet solid strata of time, audiences are invited into a quiet moment of contemplation—confronting their own existence as they gaze into their own time.

Artist Statement

For a long time, I painted human faces. A face is the trace of time a person has lived—a landscape revealing existence before words ever could. Gazing at the face of another was ultimately an act of looking inward at myself, a gaze that naturally led to questions about existence.

Walking through the forest, listening to the wind, and watching the swaying bamboo, I realized that nature, much like humanity, lives while embracing time. In my recent work, my inquiry shifted toward nature. The forest ceased to be merely an object to look at; it became a space where time and existence dwell.

My work is the process of layering that time onto the canvas. In my early practice, I created layers of time by allowing ink to seep into hanji. As the ink repeatedly bled and dried, it forged depth, turning the texture of the paper into a vessel containing time. Repetitive brushstrokes were not mere expression, but an act of engraving elapsed time onto the surface.

Recently, I have used mineral pigments to create matière, repeating the process of applying and scraping away color. These accumulated layers are not a simple aggregation of pigment, but the footprints of passing time. The canvas—where material, color, and texture converge—holds yet another layer of temporal depth. Thus, the surface exists not as a static landscape, but as a space condensed with time.

Bamboo grows continuously yet never leaves its place. Countless stalks lean against one another to form a forest, while light and wind brush through them. The repeating vertical rhythms in my work do not aim to recreate form; they are a language designed to reveal the breath of existence and the accumulation of time.

This daily, repetitive work feels like an ascetic discipline. Facing the canvas with a brush in hand, I begin to resemble the tempo of nature, finding quiet solace atop these strata of time. The more I reduce the form, the more time remains on the screen, letting the invisible energy shine clearer than the visible shape.

Bamboo is the shape of time; ink is its layer; and the colors built atop the matière are its traces. The minute marks brushing across the canvas linger and fade like a breath passing through time.

I do not paint nature; I seek to paint the way time forms existence. Time is invisible, yet it is the deepest structure underlying all being. My work is the deliberate, patient process of building that invisible time onto the canvas.
If someone standing before my paintings takes a moment to look into their own time and quietly face their existence within it, only then will this work be truly complete.

"I do not paint nature; I seek to paint the way time forms existence."
