소개 ㅣ우리는 삶이라는 거대한 도로 위에서 저마다의 목적지를 향해 쉼 없이 달려간다. 비가 거세게 세상을 일그러뜨리는 폭우 속에서도, 혹은 지나온 날들이 남긴 투박한 바느질 자국 위에서도 발걸음은 멈추지 않는다. 임지향, 홍선미 작가의 2인전 <Layered Time> 은 바쁜 일상을 질주하는 현대인들의 삶과 고요한 내면에서 시간을 직조해 나가는 삶이 어떻게 교차하는지 조명한다.
홍선미 작가는 거친 폭우 속을 가로지르는 자동차의 행렬 속에서 현대인의 자화상을 발견한다. 겉보기엔 목적지를 향한 단순한 이동처럼 보이지만, 그 차창 안에는 시기, 질투, 희망, 그리고 사랑이라는 인간의 원초적 감정이 소용돌이치고 있다. 작가는 보이지 않으나 늘 우리를 비추는 태양을 향해 나아가는 찰나의 순간들을 포착해, 바쁘게 살아가는 우리 삶의 궤적이 결국 눈부신 생명의 숨결임을 역설한다.
임지향 작가는 그 질주하는 외부의 세계로부터 안쪽을 향해 시선을 거두어들인다. 손수 지은 ‘단화’ 오브제에 바느질을 더하고, 그 위에 물감을 층층이 쌓아 올리는 행위는 고요한 무의식의 사유이자 자신을 치유하는 시간의 기록이다. 겹겹이 쌓이고 긁혀진 화면 속 흔적들은 지나간 시간과 감정이 소멸하는 것이 아니라 현재의 삶을 지탱하는 단단한 결이 됨을 보여준다. 최근작에 스며든 밝은 색채는 과거를 품은 채 앞으로의 시간을 더욱 희망적으로 마주하겠다는 따뜻한 염원의 발현이다.
이번 전시는 속도와 방향을 상실하기 쉬운 현대 사회에서, 각자의 방식으로 삶의 궤적을 그려내는 두 작가의 호흡을 만나는 자리다. 질주하는 자동차의 불빛처럼 뜨겁게 세상을 향해 나아가던 시선이, 문득 자신의 손끝이 만들어낸 내면의 흔적과 마주할 때, 관람객 저마다의 가슴속에도 따스한 태양과 깊은 사유의 시간이 스며들기를 기대한다.

<Layered Time> by Lim, Ji-Hyang, Hong, Sun-Mi
On the vast highway of life, we race tirelessly toward our respective destinations. Even through torrential downpours that distort the world, or across the coarse stitches left behind by days gone by, our steps never cease. Layered Time, featuring works by Lim, Ji-Hyang and Hong, Sun-Mi, illuminates how the lives of modern individuals—speeding through busy daily routines—intersect with lives that quietly weave time within their inner selves.
Artist Hong finds a self-portrait of contemporary humanity in the procession of automobiles navigating heavy rain. While it may appear as a simple journey toward a destination on the surface, within those car windows swirls a vortex of raw human emotions: jealousy, envy, hope, and love. By capturing these fleeting moments of advancing toward a sun that remains invisible yet ever-present, the artist asserts that the trajectories of our fast-paced lives are, in truth, the brilliant breath of life itself.
Artist Lim shifts her gaze inward, away from that rushing external world. Adding hand-stitched elements to handmade Danhwa (traditional canvas shoes) objects and layering paint over them, her process is a quiet act of subconscious contemplation and a recorded passage of self-healing. The traces etched, layered, and scraped across the surface reveal that past time and emotions do not simply vanish; rather, they form enduring layers that sustain our present lives. The brighter hues infused in her recent works reflect a warm desire to embrace the past while facing the time ahead with newfound hope.
In a modern society where it is easy to lose one's sense of speed and direction, this exhibition offers an encounter with the creative dialogue of two artists, each capturing the trajectories of existence in their own distinct way. As a gaze directed hot and outward—like the blazing headlights of a speeding car—suddenly meets the inner traces crafted by one's own fingertips, may each viewer find a moment of warm sunlight and deep reflection quietly seeping into their hearts.
