소개 ㅣ 광대한 우주 속에서 인간의 존재는 한 점의 먼지와도 같다. 그러나 그 미미해 보이는 존재 안에는 각기 다른 삶의 결, 시간, 그리고 감정의 깊이가 담겨 있다. 조희원의 작업은 바로 그 지점에서 출발한다. 작가는 우리가 살아가는 사회 속에서 당연하게 받아들여지는 수많은 기준들이 개인의 존재를 규정하고 서로를 비교하게 만드는 구조에 질문을 던진다. 그리고 그 질문을 통해 ‘한 사람의 삶이 지닌 고유한 가치’에 다시 시선을 돌린다.
조희원은 자연에서 발견되는 평범한 대상들을 통해 인간의 삶을 은유적으로 바라본다. 특히 이번 전시에서 등장하는 선인장은 척박한 환경 속에서도 스스로의 리듬으로 살아가는 존재이자, 사회 속에서 상처와 고독을 견디며 성장하는 우리의 모습이기도 하다. 자연물이 싹을 틔우고, 자라나고, 마침내 피어나는 과정은 인간이 삶의 계절을 지나며 자신만의 시간을 맞이하는 여정과 맞닿아 있다. 작가는 이러한 자연의 생을 확대하고 해체하며 그 안에 담긴 감정의 층위를 화면 위에 풀어낸다.
작업은 유화의 두터운 색채와 먹의 깊은 농담이 교차하며 만들어진다. 서로 다른 성질의 재료가 겹겹이 쌓이며 형성되는 화면은 하나의 삶이 시간과 경험 속에서 형성되는 과정을 연상시킨다. 색과 흔적이 축적된 화면 속에서 선인장은 때로는 단단하게 서 있고, 때로는 흐르듯 녹아들며 낯선 풍경을 이루어낸다. 그 풍경은 현실의 세계라기보다 내면 깊은 곳에서 피어나는 또 하나의 세계에 가깝다.
작가의 작업들은 우리 자신을 향해 질문을 던진다. 우리는 무엇과 비교하며 살아가고 있는가, 그리고 각자의 삶이 지닌 고유한 시간과 빛을 얼마나 바라보고 있는가. 작가는 자연의 작은 존재들을 통해, 누구도 대신할 수 없는 한 사람의 삶이 지닌 존엄과 가능성을 조용히 환기한다. 그 시선 속에서 관람자는 스스로의 존재를 다시 바라보게 되고, 각자의 삶이 지닌 고유한 세계를 발견하게 될 것이다.

<The Beauty of Thorns> - Solo Exhibition by Hee Won Cho
In the vastness of the universe, human existence may seem no more than a speck of dust. Yet within that seemingly small presence lies a unique texture of life—its own time, experiences, and emotional depth. The work of Hee Won Cho begins from this very point. The artist raises questions about the many standards that society takes for granted—standards that often define individuals and encourage constant comparison. Through this inquiry, the work invites us to reconsider the inherent value of each individual life.
Cho approaches human existence through ordinary elements found in nature. In this exhibition, the cactus appears as a central motif. Living in harsh environments yet sustaining itself in its own rhythm, the cactus becomes a reflection of ourselves—growing within society while enduring wounds, solitude, and resilience. Just as plants sprout, grow, and eventually bloom, human life unfolds through its own seasons, each person arriving at their moment in time. By enlarging and deconstructing these natural forms, the artist reveals layered emotions embedded within them.
The works are built through the interplay of rich oil paint and the deep tones of traditional ink. As materials with different qualities accumulate in layers, the surface of the canvas comes to resemble the way a life is shaped through time and experience. Within these layered fields of color and traces, the cactus sometimes stands firmly, while at other moments it appears to dissolve and flow, forming unfamiliar landscapes. These scenes evoke not so much the external world as an inner realm—one that quietly emerges from within.
Ultimately, her works pose a question to each of us: What are we comparing ourselves to as we move through life? And how often do we truly recognize the unique time and light within our own lives? Through small yet resilient forms from nature, the artist gently reminds us of the dignity and possibility inherent in every individual. In encountering these works, viewers may find themselves looking again at their own existence—and perhaps discovering the singular world that belongs only to them.
